The Mythology of Artemis
Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the crescent moon (Diana to the Romans). Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and twin sister of Apollo, with whom she has a close relationship. It is said she witnessed the excruciating birth of her twin and acted as midwife. She is the archetypal big sister and is competitive with her brother. She is the maid, the wild woman, huntress and protective guardian. She is the Goddess of wildlife, and is concerned with equality, fairness and justice. Marriage may not be a pressing need, and she is a travelling explorer who can stay young at heart and relate well to the young all her life.
Description
Artemis protects all animals (including their rights to live and procreate without fear of extinction), and the natural world itself. She understands that the wilderness system is whole and diverse, and has a delicate balance and integral health. She teaches the rightfulness of the natural state, (the cosmic, solar and planetary laws) personally and globally. Artemis is concerned with how we organically interact with our environment, whether we love and merge with it, or are disconnected and split from it. Artemis the midwife is able to stand with children and teenagers in transition to help them move into the next developmental stage.
