The Mythology of Demeter

Demeter is The Great Mother and the Goddess of Harvest.  She has been known by many names: in the ancient days she was Ceres, Isis the Corn Goddess, (the sign Virgo represents the Corn Maiden), the Jade Empress, the Queen of Compassion, Tara and Kwan Yin. Corn Woman is the one who brought us agriculture. She nurtured and fed the people, teaching us how to plant the grain, feed our families and raise our children. Demeter created the great Eleusinian Mysteries which were sacred religious rituals. They dominated Greek religious life for 2000 years, up until the fifth century A.D.

Description of Demeter

This archetype is the expression of the great and compassionate heart from a true humanitarian. It is a larger, more powerful (and often more difficult) version of the mother archetype. Demeter has usually known she’ll have children (often a large family), though some have been unsure yet can have unplanned pregnancies. She is the most likely archetype to foster or adopt children, including those with special needs or disabilities. There are very strong rescuing traits within Demeter. She tends to mother everyone, not just her own children. The ‘mother’ is far less likely to adopt or contribute to community children’s projects.
