The Mythology of Orpheus
Orpheus was the son of Oeagrus, King of Thrace and the muse Calliope. He was a very talented musician, poet and minstrel. He is the original Pied Piper and had the ability to entrance and bewitch people, animals and nature. He was a peacemaker and wise spiritual man, adept in the Samothracian mysteries. He was not a physically strong man, though his talents saved his Argonaut shipmates on a voyage. He drowned out the Sirens seductive songs aimed to destroy the Argonauts, his powers proving magical. He calmed storms and took action when fighting alone was useless.
Orpheus fell in love and married the beautiful nymph Eurydice. Soon after, she was bitten by a snake whilst escaping unwanted attention from Aristaeus. She dies, the great tragic moment in Orpheus’s life. Orpheus refuses to accept her death and descends to the underworld/hell, managing to persuade Hades and Persephone that he should bring Eurydice back to earth. He could have his wife back on the condition that he led from the front, never doubting that she was following. He endures a long journey with tests, until finally just before they reach the crescent, he does doubt and turns to see if she is present. In a moment she fades and is lost to him forever. Orpheus’s grief is unrelenting.
Description of Orpheus
Orpheus is a sensual, sensitive soul with very apparent musical and poetic talents. He expresses his feelings and love, and allows his heart to be open. His eyes tear up easily and little things touch him deeply. Orpheus has a well-developed feminine side, and will spend much time alone creating and expressing artistically. He can be a deep thinker, contemplating the philosophy and purpose of life, and will write and/or sing about his perceptions. He appreciates and values beauty, compassion, peace and love. He can seem magical and enchant others. Relationships are very important. Orpheus (and all maidens) long to connect to the greatest of all love, the divine, through an intense soul mate love with another. He is terrified of losing this love. Orpheus hands his ‘fate’, power and heart completely over to the ‘other’ which is self-betrayal. This can inevitably create the very loss he fears. The divine is within.
Orpheus may find the masculine world too brutal and harsh. He may struggle to find a way to integrate into society. He is prone to depression, and takes love very seriously. He has experienced great loss in his love life, either through unrequited love or the ending of a relationship. He can resist healing and descend to his own underworld, becoming unreachable. Women are very comfortable with him, and men and women become easily entranced by his creative talents.
