Is Depression Ruining Your Relationship?

Whether it’s you or it’s your significant other that seems depressed, it’s important to address the issue so it doesn’t ruin your relationship.   Despite how you feel about one another, depression could get the better of the relationship and begin to break it down.

When one person in the relationship is showing signs of depression, the other person very often takes it personally. At first, they try to help. They don’t understand why they’re unable to and can feel that they’re to blame for being unable to make their partner happy. We’re responsible for our own happiness and while we can contribute to the joy of someone else, we can’t be responsible for it. You cannot treat your partner’s depression alone.

Depression is complex and as such it often needs a complex course of treatment. If you’re facing depression, seek help. If your spouse is showing signs of depression, try to convince them to get help. You can’t solve all their problems and you can’t be responsible for making them better. You can help someone with depression by being supportive, learning about dealing with depression, and helping support them through this difficult time.

While you can’t solely solve someone else’s depression, being in an unhealthy relationship with them can contribute to a person’s depressed state.  Domestic violence, an unsupportive partner, and seemingly overwhelming domestic problems can cause you to lose track of and lose touch with who you truly are.

Self-Help for Depression

There are things you can do if you feel depressed. In some cases the absolute best course of action is to seek help from a qualified counsellor but at times, you can do things to help you rediscover yourself and rekindle lost passion for life on your own.
