When couples fight, quite often their fights seem to be about silly things. When stress builds in a relationship, it can seem like every little thing can become the source of arguments.  When you’re fighting about something petty, very often the fight is actually about other issues that go much deeper.  Sometimes, this happens without either of you even being aware of what you’re really angry about.

When one spouse refuses to attend marriage counselling, they’re often apprehensive about it because they believe that the counsellor is going to judge who in the argument is right and who is wrong.   When you’re arguing about the toothpaste tube being squeezed in the middle or whose turn it is to buy milk and these fights escalate into screaming matches and hurtful words, very often the issues run much deeper than toothpaste and milk.   Instead of judging who’s right and who’s wrong, a counselling session is designed to help you uncover the real reasons why you’re fighting so much.

As discussed in Katie’s TV episode Communicating in Your Marriage, learning about why one or both of you are frustrated could open up the communication in your marriage so that both of you have a clearer understanding of one another’s feelings and responses to certain scenarios.   It can make conflicts much easier to deal with when you’re both aware of factors that could make one of you tense or the other react harshly to a seemingly insignificant event.
